Introduction:

Most of the rural areas in Sudan suffer a sever shortage of medical awareness, medical services, qualified medical staff and the necessary equipments to practice dental services which lead to more suffering and spreading of epidemics and increase of the rate of oral disease. It is worth mention the high cost of treatment especially in the field of Dentistry where the public can not afford the cost of treatment. The faculty of Dentistry- University of Khartoum - used to organize medical field trips that aimed at lessen the suffering of the rural inhabitants at all parts of our beloved nation, by support of the students themselves and the local community at the target areas involving the youth inhabitants of the area, in addition to support from charitable people.

What is the medical field trip?

Medical field trip is directed to rural area of Sudan where people are desperate to dental services. Our association which is the association of dental student's university ok Khartoum (ADSUK) used to do these medical field trips annually twice and sometimes more. They have big experience and their organizers are well trained.

What is the skeleton of the medical field trip?

Usually the medical field trip usually formed of one hundred participants as follows:

  1. Dental students: the students are usually about sixty (males and females) from different years but mostly those of clinical years but that doesn't mean that the students in preclinical years can not work on patients, they work but under supervision.
  2. Dentists: they are usually young dentists that are known to faculty of Dentistry University of Khartoum. They teach the students and observe them during dental work so they are always beside and if there is difficult cases they see it and if it deserve reference then they refer cases to Khartoum to be seen there. They are almost thirty four
  3. Doctors: some cases needs medical consultation so we got some doctors to see them and take the other side opinions on it. We also need doctors so if emergency happened to one of our students then we got our doctor who is also beside. They are usually three
  4. Dental technicians: technicians are also there for some dental things like simple dentures mainly so they are also there. They are also three For the IADS medical field trip it will be double so every thing is times two.
MEDICAL FIELD TRIP

What are the dental services offered for people there in the rural areas?

In every medical field trip we see thousand and thousands of patients. First they come to our outpatient clinic to be diagnosed and then type of treatment is then specified .so if we can offer this type of treatment then we refer it to our clinic beside the outpatient room. The clinics we have there are as follows

Surgery clinic:
simple extraction for teeth that well diagnosed as decayed or for people that can not go to the cities to get root canal treatments either for distance problems or due to financial problems .we do tones and tones of extractions and in many cases it is the first time for students to do extractions so they learn how to do it from the available dentists and at the same time they offer safe and free treatment to the people who appreciate what you do for them. Our dentists also can do simple surgical procedure like abscess drainage and other simple surgical treatments that can be done in the place.

Perio clinic:
Here we see patients with bad oral hygiene .we tell them how to brush their teeth, advice them and do manual scaling for them .we also do tones of scaling but more importantly the counseling that we give after treatment.

Conservation clinic:
We also take our portable chair with us .we also use the instruments we have to do simple fillings for some lucky patients. We can not do lot but in one day we can see and treat about twenty patient who come for fillings.

Prosthesis clinic:
We also construct dentures for some patients with one ore two teeth missing. So first we do selection upon patients and then take impression using alginate and then at the end of the day we do the trying and delivery. It is really great when you see the smile of the denture owner patients when they never dream that they can get such thing and we do it for them in one day for free, so you can imagine how happy they become.

Health education group:
During the day students are divided into groups. One of these groups usually goes to the schools or to the houses around the clinic place or around the village. They explain to the local people some bad habits that they used to do. Patients during their waiting for the treatment also gets some dental information done by students .the students also distribute some pamphlets to the patients .if there is no dentist in the village and there is a nurse who is doing the dentist work, then they train the nurse some dental techniques and tell him when to refer the patients to the capital or the nearest hospital.

Student's pharmacy:
We offer free drugs for patients like antibiotic and analgesics .so if a patient needs a drug after the dentist consultation then we prescribe it to him and he gets it for free from the student's pharmacy.

What are the benefits that students and dentists get from these medical field trips?
  1. Students get used to the practical dental work very quickly. For many students it is the first time to do practical dental work so they come back happy that they started learning their future career and they broke up the fear of first time treatment feeling.
  2. They learn also new lessons from the sessions they take at the early day clinical work .the staff usually teaches the students short lessons about urgent things they should know and remind them with what to do and what not to do.
  3. For dentists, medical field trips were always chances for them to find new strange cases that it was the first time to see. This case was lot of time coincidence for researches and studies that changed a lot to both dentists and patients.
  4. There are lots and lots of benefits to mention like seeing new places, being in contact with other colleagues, sharing nice days together out of the university life.
What are the benefits that people get from medical field trips?
  1. People in Sudan in these rural areas are poor and ignorant, so for them these trips are chances to get free treatment.
  2. In many rural areas there is no dentist so the only way if some one got dental pain is to try to treat it with traditional drug which is in most of cases aggravate the case to a degree which can be life threatening. So we offer on place treatment also it is short but it helps a little bit.
  3. People learn a lot from the health education groups and they know what to do if an emergency happened so at least they stop what the habits they used to do.
MEDICAL FIELD TRIP

Why to come to this medical field trip in Sudan?

There are a lot of things that we think it really deserve you thinking about coming to this medical field trip:
  1. You will get the chance to do practical work which you can not do in your country from now. That doesn't mean that you are allowed to do everything but simple things like extractions, scaling, simple fillings etc are allowed and you will do tones of.
  2. You will learn new techniques and you will estimate yourself compared to the other students from the other countries
  3. You will learn other things from the other international students and dentists.
  4. You will see other people and get new experience that you never dreamed of in all your life.
IMPORATNT THINGS TO KNOW:

We are taking and are so alert about the infection control measures so nothing to fear off about this issue.
For your own safety it is better to be vaccined against hepatitis B as all our students do. It is all better to get your own lab coats to use them during the medical field trip

Conclusion:

I think this is enough to make you come and participate and see what you can do, yes this simple dental student and you simple dentists to people who have nothing rather than badly oral hygiene teeth to eat with. People need you because you are the safe hands that will save their teeth and lives.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
