Dear IADS Members,

I am proud to announce that once again IADS can offer one more Voluntary Work opportunity to its students, as I managed to establish a co-operation with Mr. Matthew McBurney, Program Director of Sustainable Volunteer Ecuador (SVE).

Smile Ecuador Dental Program gives dental students, practicing dental assistants and dentists the unique opportunity to experience dental care in a developing country by observing and participating in various clinics, such as surgery, orthodontics, and general dental practice. Depending on the level of knowledge of the volunteer/student, they will be able to have a more active role in the volunteer placement. Although the dental program is newly established and only started running this year, it has already had 5 participants. Volunteers examine on average 10 or more patients per day, which adds up to 200 per month.

Exchange students are able to learn Spanish through an accredited and registered Spanish school with the Ecuadorian Ministry of Education, with a focus in dental vocabulary.

There is no application deadline. There is no limit to the amount of students that can be received. The program runs all year round and has no specific start dates, therefore volunteers can choose the dates which suit them best. The total cost of the program is $1,800.00 CDN Dollars, which covers 30 days of the program.

The living conditions are in middle to upper class Ecuadorian families in a safe neighbourhood in North Quito. There are numerous homestays and placement opportunities.

The listed above is a brief description of the Smile Ecuador Dental Program, please find more information on our webpage under Voluntary Work.
