  • April/May Easter The official holiday is the Orthodox Easter
  • May 1 Labor Day International Labor Day
  • December 1 National holiday (Union Day)

Food:
Romania has had influence from both invaders and neighbors where it’s traditional cuisine is concerned. Romania’s traditional food sees touches of Turkish, Hungarian, Austrian, and other cuisines, but over the years, these dishes have become just as traditional as the oldest Romanian traditional foods. Some main local dishes are:

  • sarmale – minced meat, rice, onions and spices are mixed and then rolled into grape or cabbage leaves
  • mititei (mici) – grilled, longish and spiced meatballs usually made from beef meat or mixed beef and mutton meat
  • mamaliga (polenta) – made out of yellow maize cooked in boiling water with salt; when cold, it can be cut into slices just like bread; usually served hot mixed with cheese and eggs
  • tochitura Moldavian stew with fried egg and grated cheese served with polenta
  • ciorba – the Romanian sour soup is prepared by poultry meat and vegetables

Sweets:

  • cozonac – cake prepared during Christmas or Easter; it’s a cake, bread shaped with different fillings depending on the baker (raisins, nuts, cocoa, etc.)
  • papanasi - pancakes with sweet cheese, cream and comfitures
  • clatite - pancakes filled with cheese, chocolate or jam

Drinks:
Palinca is the strongest of drinks, containing 60% pure alcohol. Then comes ţuica, usually made of plums but lately produced in other flavours as well, with 40% pure alcohol. Many Romanians living in rural arease produce these two drinks by themselves at home. Wine is next, Romania is a big wine producer and some of the best wineries are Murfatlar, Cotnari, Bohotin, Jidvei. Beer in Romania is cheap. The most important local brand is Ursus, but you can find many international brands.

Other: basically anything from fast food chains to fine dining

Advantages

Bucharest is located in the southeastern part of Romania. Just like many Eastern European capital cities, Bucharest was built on the banks of a river – the Dambovita. Bucharest has been the capital of Romania since the 19th century. Now it is a modern and jouyfull city, where you can visited a lot of interesting sites and also have a lot of fun. Fans of museums will enjoy Bucharest as there is many to choose from. On the other hand, if you want to go straight to the big attractions, you can visit the Parliament Palace – the 2nd largest administrative building in the world after the Pentagon, the Univeraity Square or the Metropolitan Church.
There are also a lot of clubs for each kind of music and they are opened until 5 or 6 in the morning! Everybody is very kind and there are a lot of beautiful girls.:) Bucharest is a great starting point from which to explore the rest of the country. Away from the buzz of the city, you will find a different side of Romania – life in the countryside moves more slowly, the air is crisp and hospitality abounds. At 120km from Bucharest you’ll find many mountain resorts, where you can go skiing in the winter and climbing in the summer. There are also two well-knowed castles: Peles and Pelisor.
