We would like to invite you to the 59th IADS & YDW Annual World Dental Congress in Romania.

Precongress – Mamaia (17. – 19. 8. 2012) – 120 Euro

Mamaia is a summer resort on the western shore of the Black Sea . It is located north of Constanta , Romania . Mamaia is an independent city district of Constanta but very few permanent residents (under 50), but was overcrowded during the summer. Construction of residential, taking place today on the shores of Lake Siutghiol , will likely change this situation.
Mamaia is a strip of land between the Black Sea and Lake Siutghiol with a length of 8 km, but only 300 m wide beach very long, with a width up to 250 m is covered with fine sand. Over this are many shops, restaurants, terraces, clubs and discos.

Congress – Bucharest (19. – 24. 8. 2012) – 370 Euro

Bucharest is the capital of Romania and at the same time, the largest city , industrial and commercial center of the country. Population of 1,944,367 inhabitants (est. January 1, 2009 [4] ) is that Bucharest is the sixth most populous city in the European Union . In fact, however, Bucharest gathered daily over three million people, and experts predict that over the next five years, the total will exceed four million. [5] . Add to this the fact that villages around the city, which will be part of future Metropolitan Area , population totals about 430,000 people. [6]
The first mention of the village is in 1459 . In 1862 became the capital of Romania. Since then undergoes constant change, the center stage of art, culture and media . Between the two world wars, elegant architecture and elite Bucharest brought him the nickname “Little Paris”. Currently, capital has the same administrative level as a county and is divided into six sectors

Postcongress – Bucovina (24. – 26. 8. 2012) – 120 Euro

There is Indeed no other place in the world than Bucovina in Northern Moldavia, where a group of Orthodox monasteries with their exterior mural paintings are to be seen. These Painted Monasteries are part of UNESCO’s World Heritage for their rarity and beauty. Another group are the Wooden Churches of Maramures, unique examples that combine Gothic style with traditional timber construction.

With many photos and extensive information this website presents the unique and rich cultural heritage of Bucovina, Maramures, and Romania in general – extensive travel information and guides, pictures, monasteries, churches, attractions and destinations all over Romania.

Bucovina is among the most attractive and frequented touristic area on Romania’s map. It is not by chance that this area, famous today in the whole world, was honored in 1975 with the international “Pomme d’Or” prize, by the International Federation of Journalists and Writers of Tourism and the ancient architectural monuments with inside and outside frescoes, from this part of the world were appointed by UNESCO in the list of the universal art monuments.

Keeper of ancient civilization, where history and legend merge together, Suceava district holds evidences of man’s presence from ancient times. The 96 incineration tombs found out at Zvoristea, as well as the archaeological discoveries in Silistea Scheii, Suceava , Bosanci and Dolhestii Mari, prove that Thracian –Geta and Dacian settlements existed there a long time ago.

The lands of Suceava represented the places where Moldavia became an independent and feudal state in the 14th century. Locations such as Baia, Siret, Suceava, Radauti still keep edifices (fortresses, church foundations, princely homes) dating the time of the first Moldavian voivods. Other localities, such as Putna, became a strong manifestation for Romanian people’s sense for an united nation. To this common sense many important persons contributed: Mihai Eminescu, Mihai Slavici, Ciprian Porumbescu and some other young people that came here all over Romanian lands. This fact strongly expresses the active role the people from these lands have played along the history.

Try to brainstorm and suggest the name of the new preventive program!

It may seem for most of the people that brushing their teeth is a commonplace issue which everybody can handle, but in fact, many problems of the oral cavity are caused by the use of not appropriate brushing techniques. The caries is not the only example, but even injured gingiva is a common outcome of mistakenly learned brushing manners.

As a future dentist, we should participate in prevention because it is important part of dentistry.

IADS is preparing a preventive program which will be focused on general population. On one exact day the dental students of all over the world will go out to the streets to offer a short demonstration of accurate brushing techniques and tooth care to ordinary people. The instructions will be provided on plastic models of the oral cavity but people will be also offered the brushing techniques to be shown and explained right on them. More information about the project you can find here.

Its a student contribution to the world oral health. On the other hand, the project should help the students to gain some important experience to communicate with their future patients – common people. Its the skill of communication that is so underrated in our area of study.

Now we are offering you an opportunity to be involved in prophylaxis activity and to be at the birth of the new project of the IADS.

We would like to ask you for your help in creating the name of the whole project. Just let your creativity burst out and win a valuable price- dental tools (tooth brush, tooth paste, etc). Send your suggestions to the email address: prophylaxis@iads-web.org

A Greater Dental Experience to Remember

Dental volunteer work is designed to help the people in need of dental treatment, and through it young graduates and students can gain clinical experience as well. Living in developing country, you’ll witness the impact of poverty on dental health. Dentists struggle to convey message about the very basic of oral hygiene ( even in the situation which lack of health care education and financial exist). This kind of condition shows that the number of cases is way higher and also means that patient have considerably further advance cases than likely seen in western world.

International Dental Summer School organized by Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta has already provided a Dental Voluntary Project since 2010. The activities were conducted in a village or a remote area that indeed had a high number of dental cases. we had 2 Voluntary Works that treated over 350 patients in both IDSS 2010 and IDSS 2011. This year, International Association of Dental Students (IADS) is collaborating with IDSS for an International Voluntary Project. This hauls a challenge to the organizer to serve a higher quality of the program. Therefore, with some intensive discussion and meetings, the Organizer decided to make this dental voluntary project bigger than previous years in which IDSS 2012 Dental Voluntary work will take place in 4 different places with the target of over 600 patients treated this year.

26 International Students coming from 13 countries already experienced IDSS Dental Voluntary Works in 2010 and 2011. The responses were very positive. They learned a lot how to treat the patients in remote places with very simple facility. The mechanism of work was already framed in Standard Operational Procedure. The participants were divided into 2 portions of work. This was according to the years they belong to. For preclinical year students (assumed as non-clinical exposed student), the options were on Sterilization, Physical Examination, Operator Assistance, Prescription, and Public Dissemination (to do such fun dental health education with villagers). For clinical Students and Fresh Graduate(Young Dentist), they’re allowed to handle curative treatment such as Atraumatic Restoration Treatment (ART) , 3 Mix MP / Lesion Sterilization and Tissue Repair Restoration and extraction.

The voluntary activities were all actually the extension of skill lab activity in which after getting the basic knowledge and skill training, the students are expected to become all capable to do anything needed in voluntary work. Therefore the participant must follow all of the class, skills lab and other activities in educational program before getting involved in voluntary works. The application of IDSS 2012 has already started and the vacancies are still available. The Application deadline is 11th May 2012.The Educational Program costs 380 € and includes 3 weeks stay at Hotel , breakfast , educational transportation and program ( Fee doesn’t include Visa and Tour). IDSS 2012 also offers a Non Educational/Social program that costs only 100 €. For more information, we welcome everyone to contact us.

The IADS Midyear Meeting is the first time in a year when International Association of Dental Students (IADS) Delegates and representatives from all the IADS member countries come together in order to assure the successful continuity of the IADS projects, long-term development strategies and family.

The main activity during the Meeting is the General Assembly which is composed of all the IADS member Delegates, who proudly represent their national/local dental student communities and it’s interests. The General Assembly takes place for 2-3 days, during which important development topics are put under discussion and debate. The General Assembly has the decisional power and it’s decision voted by the majority is irrefutable. During the last General Assembly, important measures and strategies were discussed, adopted or rejected. The most debated ones were related to the creation of an IADS Advisory Board, offering new logistical strategies in developing the International Voluntary Program and the creation of the IADS National and Local Scientific Officers. The already existing projects are heavily discussed and measures are proposed to be applied during the Standing Committee on Research and Education and National Exchange Officers Meetings.

During the MYM, the National/Local Exchange and Scientific Officers have the opportunity of signing new partnership agreements which bring educational and research dental opportunities to the students they represent.

IADS is also a family and in order to celebrate the diversity and friendship which unites us all, during the MYM Egypt 2012 it will be organized an Exchange Fair and a social program . The Exchange Fair gives the chance to every country present at the Meeting to expose their culture through the traditional food, beverages and music. It is a unique opportunity to feel closer to each other’s heritage and creating long-lasting friendships.
